The origins

Casperia’s identity has been shaped by a long history: from the medieval origins of Aspra to the village we know today, which has retained its historic fortified layout.
The birth of Aspra
The settlement we know today developed on the hill under the name Aspra, protected by its first defensive walls.
An independent municipality
Aspra became an independent municipality, beginning a long tradition of local autonomy and civic organisation.
The medieval walls
A second circuit of defensive walls was built and remains a distinctive feature of the village’s architecture today.
The name Casperia
The former Aspra officially adopted the name Casperia, by which the village is known today.
A walk through time
A village to explore on foot
Casperia’s historic centre is nestled around the top of the hill. Its lanes, arches, stairways and stone houses follow a concentric pattern, leading towards the square and the Church of San Giovanni Battista.
Walking through the village means taking time to admire the details of its old houses, passing through medieval gateways and stopping at viewpoints overlooking the Tiber Valley, Mount Soratte and the Sabine Mountains.
